I just bought a 1985 f 150 with a i6 and 4sp manual transmission. I want to put a 302 with an automatic transmission in it. What all do I need to change and what can I keep. What type of transmission could you recomend that I use. I am not trying to race it or anything like that just to use it as a daily driver and to pull my 70 AMC Javelin that I am restoring. Any advice would be helpful.
you need a radiator, hoses motor mounts and if you can get the frame mounts from the truck get them. ive done the swap from 302 to 300 3 times and once on a 84 and a 79 I needed the frame towers.
you'll need a new throttle cable
The 302 and 300 use the same bellhousing.
The best transmissions for towing in my opinion would be the NP435 (very low first but unsycronized) and the T19 (slightly higher 1st gear but it is sycronized). If you have to get an auto, get a C6
I'd also say that the 300 is a better pulling engine then the 302.
If you work it like a truck, a 300 is better. 302 is a car engine so it feels a little funner to Drive but sucks at actually hauling/towing
the 300 was available in F25HD's and F350's but the 302 was not.
