steering wheel replacement

I have been looking to replace the steering wheel on my 97 Mountaineer with another (used one). I see them on e-bay but none have the airbag. How big a deal is it to remove the existing wheel with airbag and then reinstall the airbag onto the new wheel. I would assume that the airbag is some sort of module?

The wheel currently on the truck has had the life beat out of it by the previous owner.

thanks,
-John

in my manual for an 02 is a matter of unscrewing and unplugging the electrical connectors...make sure you disconnect the batter and dont sit directly in front of it

Replace Steering Wheel

I just replaced the steering wheel on my 98 Explorer. The caution on the airbag is to disconnect the battery and wait for at least two minutes before removing it. Remove the two plastic plugs on either side of the underside of the wheel and remove the fasteners holding the bag and horn mechainsm. One problem I had was with the puller itself. With the wheel straight up in the straight ahead position, the threads for the puller on the left side are very weak and shallow. The base metal is aluminum. Be very careful not to pull the puller bolt out of the threads. Otherwise it is an easy change. I replaced it with a leather late model Mustang Cobra wheel.
