In an earlier message you indicated that you had snapped a rod or two. It is unlikely that you will be able to use anything after that happens. I am back to my original recommendation! Replace your destroyed engine with a 391 FT motor. Buy either a rebuilt or good running used engine so you can get back to work. Customers are hard to get and easy to lose.
that was a guess the motor's out but i didn't have time to pull any thing off it yet. i'll keep you posted. thanks for all the info you guys have been great.
You might want to check to make sure your engine mounts will
be the same. Although they are close some guys have
talked about having to fabricate some parts to make
everything fit. Hope this helps!
ok heres the low down. finaly got time to open the motor last night. now the cam, lifters and the push rods are new they have no signs of wear at all. what i did find is the pistons are marked on top 60 over and the number 2 cylinder on the passenger side has two cracks running down the cylinder. other than that all the top end gaskets are new all the cylinders still have cross hatching in them. i haven't opened the bottom end yet so i don't know how that looks. i called every bone yard with in a hundred miles of me on friday to try and find a 391 with no luck so does any one think it would be worth having this one cylinder re sleeved? any other ideas? the one major problem is i have 3 weeks to do this.
Since everything else looks good, get that cylinder re-sleeved. Then get a piston and rings to replace that, the piston is most likely screwed up. If it's not, the rings will be. At the very least you'll need new rings on that cylinder.
While you're in it, you might as well put in a good cam, like the 343971. That should work good with the FT 391.
Then get new bearings and a gasket set, and throw it back together!
Sounds like you might have some bearing issues on the bottom end too. Unless the piston rocked in the cylinder enough to hit the head. Take the bottom end apart and inspect.
i thought about that to. when i pushed down on all the pistons the number three piston on the passenger side right after the junk cylinder droped down about a 1/16 of an inch. that told me right away that i had bearing problems.
the story gets better. i opened the bottom end to find the rod from the number 2 cyl on the passenger side wedged above the crank into the number 2 cyl on the driver side. the rod cap broke alowing it to come off the crank. the crank then hit the rod pushing it towards the cam snaping the skirt. the cam's ok the rod didn't hit it and the other piston is ok after further inspection. i don't see any cracks in the block so i think i'm going to luck out. thanks to all you guys who helped.
