Hey guys (and gals) my oldest son's 69 F250 is in need of a steering box. His is adjusted it as much as he can but it still has lots of play. Can these be rebuilt or have to replace, and if so any ideas on where we can get a new or re-built?.. nay help would be nice..
There are 2 possibilities for the PS box. One was made by Bendix, and the other by Saginaw.
The Saginaw box is stronger, beefier and more reliable than the Bendix. It was used '68 - '79 in F-100s to F-250s, and is easily available as a rebuilt from the major chains.
The Bendix box is weaker, susceptible to heat, and is not easily available either as a core OR as a rebuild. It wasn't use after '68 or '69, and that box wasn't used on any other vehicle, Ford or otherwise. If you have the Bendix box, I strongly advise you go to the trouble to replace it with a Saginaw, even though it will require a few modifications.
If you have the Saginaw (Ford) box, then it it is well worth your time to get a remanufactured replacement.
Yes my son's whole front-end has been rebuilt...everything... how do we tell which box he has? Does it say on the box? Guess we have to pull it first...ugh! Thanks for the info neat stuff!
