I am having a problem with failure to start. Engine spins, will not start. Prior fix was to wait 15 mins, then it would start. Already referred to dealer who could not find problem after heat soak, etc. Problem now much worse. Have listened for fuel pump noise, waiting with key activated - no results. Engine has 10k miles after dealer replacement due to cam tensioner problem. Any ideas?
Thanks -
>Some people have probs with cank position sensor or wiring.
>Others (me) had probs with a relay under the hood, which had dirty contacts which was a real pain to find, until it wouldn't start at all.
Q)Does the "check engine" light come on when turning over? if so then you have power to computer.
Q)Does the fuel pump start for a few seconds when you turn to key to "on" (not start)?
I had the EXACT same symptoms and situation. Very frustrating - had the truck towed into the dealer several times, and they could not diagnose. Finally I went with the tow truck to the dealer and made them hook up their computer immediately... it spun momentarily, but then started. During that momentary spin the computer detected problem - a faulty crank position indicator. Replaced the part, everything now OK after a number of months and thousands of miles.
I had the same problem on my 92 Explorer. Problem was a bad fuel pump relay. Once I replaced it, the problem went away. If you are not hearing the fuel pump whizz for a few seconds when you turn the key on, it is either a bad relay or a bad fuel pump. My money is on the $7 relay. Swap it out with one of the other relays under the power distribution box and see if your problem goes away...
