CE light goes "POOF"...!!!

Got a 98' Mountaineer AWD...161k miles. The CE lights has been on for about a year now. Got codes P401 ...something close to a bad O2 sensor. After hearing a very well -known local radio station talk about putting a full tank of BP Ultimate (98 octane) in to clean out the engine, I decided to do it. Guess what..the CE light went out and it has been out for a couple of days now and it runs alot smoother. Any suggestions as to why 1 tank of this type of gas would clear codes that have been present for over a year?

Thanks...

Better gas has better detergents mixed with it. Usually the higher octane gas has more concentrated detergents in them. Perhaps this helped clean a sticking fuel injector, some sensors, or other deposits. If you run cheaper gas, carbon deposits will form quickly, hurting all those sensors.

That's basically what I heard. But paying almost .50cents more a gallon can definitely hurt a wallet. When I had the injectors, spark plugs w/wires and belts replaced, the repair guy stated that the higher octane would keep the valves and injectors clean and save moeny in the long run. CE still out.."DEY IS A GOD" If I stay with the higher ( BP Ultimate ) octane gas, will it hurt the engine in the long run eventhough the manual states to stay with "regular"?

I can't say whether running high octane is bad, bad I never do and follow Ford's recommendation of 87 octane.

However, I do run better gas such as Chevron, which adds Techron, their detergent formula. Chevron's Techroline is also available as a gas additive and have used it in all my fuel injected engines. I imagine BP has a good detergent additive, too.

If you search this forum, you can find lots of comments from other users about the higher octane gasses.

That sounds good to help get rid of the check engine light on my 1999 Mountaineer when i use the 93 octane it has a hard time starting in the morning and when using the 87 octane it starts fine, weird but i will stick to the 87 octane....
