[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jul-02 AT 08:03 AM (EST)] My A/C stopped working about a month ago. Lost all of the refridgerant. I took it to two different shops and neither could find a definitive leak. Since they cant find the leak they want to replace the compressor, the air dryer and all the hoses. All of this for the low price of $1100.00 Here is the question, are these guys serious? Both shops. What could be wrong with the A/C. It was working fine, then one day no more. I even stood there at the front while they were looking for the leak with the special sniffer and the ultraviolet light but no visible or audible warnings from the tools. What direction do you think i should go in? I'm very handy and can definately replace parts myself and borrow the guages to repressurize the system. Thanks for your suggestions!!!!

First if any of these parts were leaking they would have found a leak. (boy if that ain't rocket sicence for the repart shops)
Did they recharge the system? if they did how fast did it leak out.
or was the system alredy charged when you brought it to them.
If it was charged when you brought it to them then I would have to lean towards their side. Although i would not replace all the parts at one time. If you get luckey it will be the first part replace and a cheep bill too. But also, if it is the last part replaced you will have a little more in labor charges to add to the bill.
Could be in your evaporator core or in the condenser since these parts anr kind of hidden from view and a leak underneath may not show up as readily. I have seen some broken systems that leak as they are being charged, allowing to hear and possibly see the refrigerant escape. If it is taking the charge in, then your compressor is probably good. The drier is only a $40 part at Autozone so no big deal there. You might want to check out an O-ring kit and replace all the rings yourself. Time consuming, but much cheaper than replacing large parts and it will probably solve your problem. Good luck...
