what would be my best bet on a carb intake combo to boost the fb-t and add a some high end power on a 351m? it was rebuilt 20,000 ago so its a strong engine. i just feel it might be lacking some potential.
cool that will get rid of the old cast headers i just didn't think it would make too much of a difference because everyone i've talked to said headers arn't a big concern, thanx.
Think Air Flow!
Everything contributes to or restricts air flow. A 4 Barrel Carb will improve air flow, porting the heads will improve air flow, headers will improve air flow.
The largest restriction to air flow in a stock 351M is the exhaust manifold, the next is the exhaust ports.
Any effort to improve the air flow in a 351M/400 motor should start with headers and end with the carb.
IMO, the worst restriction to airflow in a stock 351M is the camshaft. Once you get that fixed, everything else (exhaust, 4V carb, etc.) will be much more worthwhile.
I've got the top end of my 79 351m torn down right now. I checked the lifters and they appear to have a significant amount of wear. So I was thinking of replacing the cam and lifters. Would you have a recomendation as to what cam and lifter set I should get? Money is a concern though, I was looking at some summit cam and lifter sets because they're cheap, are these cams worth having? Or would I be better off to go with a crane or comp set?
If the engine is nearly worn out, it won't matter (except for the performance). If the engine has a lot of life left in it, why cheap-out on parts that should last for the life of the engine?
For performance, if your engine is otherwise stock, you'd be better off with the Comp 255DEH. It will give you more torque than the Summit cams, and probably more mid-range power as well.
If you're changing the cam, I'd suggest getting lifters and valve springs to match, as recommended by the cam manufacturer.
well now i've got a 600 cfm edelbrock 4v carb on a performer 400 non egr intake, the heads are ported, and now have headman headers at 1 and 5/8 into a 3" colector. so its really gets up and moves now.
