I did some work on my explorer yesterday (replaced rear brakes and spark plugs)and everything seemed to go well. None of the wires were replaced out of firing order since the plugs were changed one at a time and the wires are new. The plugs are bosch platinum non gapping. We (the mechanic I was working with)checked the #1 wire and it had good spark. None of the fuses for the fuel or ignition system were blown. When we checked the fuel bleeder no residual fuel was coming out so we are thinking something with the fuel system. Any idea what might in the fuel system might have failed and where I should look. Going to check the inertia switch today, but it seems like a long shot.
It sounds like something with the fuel pump. Turn the key on and see if you hear the fuel pump whizzing for a few seconds. If not, then the fuel pump relay is probably bad. Mine went out and it would crank and crank but never fire. If you can hear it, better check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Should be between 30 - 40 psi. Otherwise, it must be a spark problem...
We listened for the fuel pump but did not hear the pump making sound. We did get spark when we tested the spark plug cables. I don't think we were getting any fuel pressure so it might be the pump. I'm paging through the Chilton's manual but I can't seem to find the fuel pump relay. Can you point me in the right direction?
If you don't hear the pump, as mentioned, I would check to see if a wire was accidentally dislodged during the maintenance. I know it's a tight fit to change the plugs, and it's always possible a connector or hose was dislodged.
If looking at the engine bay from the front, there is a power distribution box on the left. Inside of it, you will find some very large fuses, one marked for the fuel pump. Check it first to see if it is blown. If it is good, you have to remove the box to get to the relays (they are underneath). Mine had a problem with draining the battery, so I took all the realys out and replaced them one at a time until I found the bad one. I think the fuel pump relay is either the farthest left or the next one. Just start pulling them one by one, then turn the key on until you find one that does nothing. That will be the bad one. Take it to your Ford dealer and get a new one (about $7). Good luck...
Sorry it took so long to reply but I just came back from my vacation. It turns out I had tripped the inertia switch while replacing the spark plugs. One had slipped down into the engine compartment and I tripped the switch while trying to rock it out. Thanks for all the suggestions.
