This is only my second post, so I wasn't to sure where to post this question.
I see a lot of posts where it states that todays engines are a lot stronger than older engines. I'm sure there are no arguments there. My question would be, are the frames built stronger also? Any input would be great,
thanks.
In a nutshell, no. The older frames used a lot more steel, making them more rigid. This came at a price since the frame would not fold up in a wreck. The new frames are strong enough for doing what they are designed to do. The key today is to use less steel and brace it.
It probably also depends on what you consider stronger. The newer frames use less steel but more of it is boxed so it is stiffer when twisting it to help the handling.
My wife was rear-ended in our 98'. The receiver hitch did'nt budge but the frame and consequently the bed folded like bread. It was able to be fixed and in discussions with the dealership I was told that they were designed to crumple to absorb the impact.
