I have a 1997 Ford Explorer. In the last couple of months, it has not been starting up regularly. The first time it happened, I called Triple-A to come give me a jump start, thinking it was a dead battery or something. But when he came, even jumping it didn't start it up. He noticed that even though the car wouldn't start, plenty of juice was getting to the battery (lights on, etc.). I had it towed to the mechanic's, but once it got there, it started up just fine. They couldn't fix anything because they couldn't identify a problem. My boyfriend, who is somewhat knowleagable about cars, doesn't think it's the starter or solaniod cell, because by the sound of it, that process is working just fine. It's done the same thing to me several times now, and no one can figure out what it is. Can you help?
>If you could tell me will it crank over or will it crank and
>not start
Gosh, you'll have to excuse my ignorance. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "crank." The way I usually describe it is, I turn the ignition switch on, then the engine goes chughety, chughety, chug, chughety, chughety, chug, but doesn't start. Sometimes it will catch and turn over after two or three tries, but sometimes it won't catch. One time, I tried to start it two or three times, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then came out, tried again and it started. Sorry to be so vague, but each time it happens, it happens a little differently. Hope that gives you enough info to think of what it can be. I sure appreciate your effort.
Next time it doesn't start do this. See if the check engine light comes on when the key is in the on position, if not the eec power relay may be sticking. If the light comes on then turn the key of and on many times and try to here if the fuel pump turns on. I have seen way to many with sticking relays. The pcm and fuel pump use the same part # relay and they go bad all the time. (intermittent sticking). The only other problem I have seen is an ocasional bad ckp sensor and/or connection. If its the connection it will start after you unplug and plug it back in. Good luck.
