lowering rear end

I have a '78 F-100 and would like to lower the rear end just enought to bring it leverl with the front end. What's the easiest and cheapest way? I've read on here that you can just use the rear shackles without the hangers? Is this the spring shackles....and will this work safely?

Try A.I.M. industries for drop shackles and/or front spring drop hangers.

You can raise the front spring hanger on the rear spring assembly up on the frame fairly easy. Redrill new holes, bolt up using grade 8 bolts and hack off any access hanger on top interfering with the bed. That would lower you about an inch or two cheaply and safely.

A.I.M. Sucks dont get nothing from them. there just a cheap brand of BellTech. U can get the Axel flip kit for the back. U can get it with just the brackets and used ur old stuff... it only cost like 70 bucks. Thats what im doing. If u want to get all the new stuff like u-bolts and stuff its liek $175. But that shoudl drop it in the back to level the truck out...

i would do the axle flip because with a spring under axle wrap is almost non-existant

Load it with gravel until you have the desired height. . You could probably find shorter blocks for the back. I could be wrong, your truck might not even have blocks??

If you flip the axel you wil get 4" to 5" of drop and may need to notch the frame. Lots of work. The A.I.M. pieces for the rear are good. Wont say the same about their "I" beams.

So, I'm still undecided on which way to go. By flipping the axle you still have to notch the frame. But by raising the front hanger a couple inches, redrilling wholes, and removing a couple leafs, you can get nearly a 4" drop?

CACWBY, mentioned this is what he did. Wonder if I could get some pics off him.

Removing springs can do strange things. You might get a yaw effect going down the road similar to low rear tire pressure. I used the A.I.M. rear shackes for 2" of drop, then the front leaf spring mount for another 1". There is another hole for the spring eyes in the front mount that will yeild another 1" drop for a total of 4". I haven't gone to that one yet due to tire clearance. I don't think you need to worry about "c' section on the frame this way. You may however have to shorten your drive shaft.

This allows you to retain the original spring stiffness and you can add air bags to adjust height/load when needed.
