I was messing with my timing today. i retarded it about 1/8th turn and it wouldn't start. I put it back and then CLUNK! While I was cranking the motor over i hear a clunk, then my motor no longer turns. I got out and tried to crank it with a wrench. I found a remanufactured 390 for about $1200. If I got a non smog motor, would I have to run 91 octane? Theres also a 460 + E4OD in the truck trader for $1900, but that would end up costing more than 3000 from start to finish. I'm really po'd. How much would rebuilding my mill cost? Is there any other thing that would keep my engine from moving?
Check flywheel/flexplate bolts etc. in the bellhousing. Will it turn backwards? A non smog motor will not need premium fuel unless it has been built with more compression.
Hard to give estimates because we don't know the engines condition, but a stock rebuild without major head work will run ~$600, if you need major head work(valves, guides, seats) then ~$1000.
Check the starter the shaft may have turned in the housing or a loose connection it is possible. The stud can be turned loose while the nut is still on it and it will lose all connection. Hell the starter may be toast from all the trial starting....
Check the starter. I thought mine was locked up once, only to find that a starter tooth had broken and wedged itself in between the next tooth and the flywheel. Take off bellhousing dust cover, new napa starter, and it's good to go.
The clunk was probably the starter giving itself a wedgie.
Yup. You guys are right on. The gear on my starter was shattered into about 5 pieces. The starter has a lifetime warranty, hopefully I can apply. Thanks alot.
If you are getting your starters from Kragen's Definintly get the Autolite starter it is more expensive but worth it. I went through 4 of the cheaper ones before I upgraded. No problems since.
