I've been searching for a few months for the truck I want. I'm looking for a 95-97 F-250 or 350, black, manual, regular cab, long bed, PSD. I've only had 2 close enough trucks. The one was red, and the black one I found is automatic. I was thinking if I were to get the red one, just paint it black. So why not get the black one and swap a manual tranny in there? Which would ya'll do?
Search longer and farther.
It will cost you just as much for the truck you want as the one you don't want. I would find the drivetrain and chassis configuration that you want first, then have it painted.
It's almost like everthing is connected together and you will go through ALOT of work and expense to change your drivetrain.
I looked for 8 months to find mine. I took the long way to work every morning just to get a look at the car lots. Found it by pure persistence.
Yea I'd sure not buy a truck just to tear into it and change a tranny. My superduty is nether the color that I wanted nor the tranny that I wanted when I was truck shopping - but I got such a good deal that I just couldn't pass it up!! Find the truck with the options that you want and then paint it if you have to!! That's my vote!!
Found the truck with all the options I want, but its red. Not saying that I don't like red, 'cause I do, but I have plans for a good bit of chrome and it'll stand out more on black I think. So that truck has a better chance now that there's 2 paint votes.
Now another thing I forgot to ask about was that my father keeps telling me about this guy he knows that rebuilds vehicles. If I were to get him to rebuild me one, I can go ahead and do the mods I was to it while he's working on the body and frame, plus he's going to have to paint it anyways so I could have him paint it what I want. But I'm not sure how weak the frame would end up being. Any opinions on rebuilds?
If you're talking about rebuilding a wrecked or salvaged vehicle, I think it all comes down to the quality of the people doing the rebuild. A lot of people can pull a frame and straighten it. There's also alot of people that won't because it's not going to hold up under the stress that these drivetrains can make.
I would not want anyone to build me a rebuilt PSD truck unless they were very familiar with these trucks. I have done alot of wrenching in my life and I am learning more and more about these trucks every day. These trucks can be VERY complex. One pinched wire can drive you nuts. One of the users here by the name of resurrectedsd has rebuilt a burn job and I don't know if he has gotten it running yet. I do know that he was having some troubles though, and it didn't sound like he went cheap on the build. I would hate to see someone else go through the same troubles.
A rebuilt f-150 is one thing, a PSD is different IMO.
Ya, I doing a full ground up rebuild on a 99, and let me tell you. PAIN IN THE ***!!! Wouldn't do it again. Given I saved money and now its exactly what I want (Still won't f'ing start). But its just a pain.. And i've got all the good ****, so its not even a matter of parts... So if you want to do the rebuild good luck! If you don't know much about desiels and ****, find someone who does first before you jump into something like that, otherwise don't even start... Just my 2 cents...
