How are the front tires wearing? Have you crawled under and looked for loose things by pulling on them? The noise could be any of a number of things but there's a few to look at. I've got 174,000 on my 94 and I wonder why they haven't worn out yet (course, they get lubed every 3-4000 miles).

Lube (chassis grease) won't replace worn metal. To check ball joints, I raise the vehicle and use a pry bar to try to lift the tire while watching the joint for movement. I suppose the ball joint may be dry and making noise and grease might stop it, but the negative issues surrounding a worn ball joint will be there until it's replaced and the front end is aligned.
