Can Anyone Tell Me Of Anything New As Far As Breaking In A Brand New Motor? I Recently Purchased A 04 With The 6.0 And It Only Has 3500 Miles On It. Is There Anything At This Point I Should Worry About? Did The First Owner Already Set The Rings And Such? And Another Thing,i Test Drove A 04 Off The Lot And It Seemed To Shift Differently Than The One I Purchased. The One I Purchased Has The Old Style Shifter Handle With The Little Button, the One I Test Drove Had A Button That Covered The Whole End Of The Shifter Handle. The One Off The Lot Seemed To Down Shift A Lot Quicker When I Tapped The Brake Pedal. Is There An Update For My Truck That Will Address This Situation?
Read the owners manual, if available, along with the diesel supplement. I beleive it states 1,000 miles for initial breakin period. Long time diesel owners will tell you however, that 10,000 - 15,000 miles is true break in period.
If you do not have the manual / diesel supplement it is important that you get one from your local Ford Dealer. In addition you can have the Ford dealer run an OASIS Report to see what has been serviced on your vehicle to date.
There is know way to know how the previous owner drove your vehicle.
In order to asist you more it will be important to know your engine build date. Build date located on the driver side valve cover...rear. Some '04 trucks had '03 motors which had some problems. Engine build dates after 09/29/2003 have the '04 engine with fewer issues.
It is my understanding that there is virtually no difference in the transmissions. Since it appears that you have purchased a pre-owned vehicle there is always the chance that the previous owner installed a preformace program which would noticeably alter your shift points.
I Have No Reason To Believe The Prev Owner Altered The Trucks Performance Features.... All Im Saying Is That The New One Off The Lot Down Shifted Harder And Sooner After Tapping The Brake Pedal. And I Understand You About The Build Date And Oil Addative. Should I Put That In Until I Hit Like 15,000?
Ok,i See What You Are Saying About Addatives... And Yes I Have The 6.0 And Both Units Were Being Driven In The T/h Mode. The Used On I Purchased With 3000 Miles On It Does Down Shift Though Not As Abruptly As The One I Drove That Was New Off The Dealer Lot.
HERE is a good thread on engine break in. I posted an article on breaking in a diesel engine there that should help you out. At 3500 miles you are already past the crucial break in point, but I wouldn't expect full break in until you reach anywhere between 15-30K miles. You should notice an increase in fuel mileage up to this point.
