My 76 would start, but imediately shut off after I towed it from Ky to OH. I thought it was the carb so I rebuilt it and checked all of the lines and installed a new filter. Not the problem. I started thinking ignition problems and found my coil-to-distributer wire terminal was broken so I replaced it and thought problem solved. Didn't help. I am not getting any spark after I release the key from the start position. The motor cranks up and immediately dies. Some one said the ignition switch might be bad in some way. Any Ideas? Getting very frustrated. It ran fine in Ky and I towed it in some very hard rain and put on a new battery when I got here but those were the only differences between Sun. and Mon.
I removed the ignition switch and downloaded the test page for it. The switch has continuity between all of the appropriate points in all of the switch positions. Would reversing the battery cables fry alternator diodes or blow fuses that would cause my problem??? Back to the garage. Need Help.
Sounds as if your ballast resistor is shot. When you start your engine, the ignition is fed a full 12 volts while cranking to make a hotter spark. Once you release the key, the power to the ignition is rerouted through a special calibrated wire that only lets about 9.5 volts through to the system. I had this problem with my 73 years ago, I tracked down to resistor wire, cut it out, and replaced it with a dodge type ballast resistor. I have also been told that the electronic ignition fords dont use the resistor circuit, but it sounds like the problem to me- maybe the actual brainbox controlls that????
I just found the problem, there was a loose wire to the starter solenoid. Just atached enough to look good, but not actually touching. I was glas to find the problem but dissappointed at my oversight. Thanks for the help, you will hear more from me later. I'm sure
