300 six head swap question

I am working on an 86 ford f 150 with a 300 six. It's carburated. It did not have any smog tubes to the head. The current head is cracked. If I buy a remanufactured head the one with smog tube holes is almost half price. Can I just plug those holes off and will it fit ok? This is an old farm truck an just use it occasionally. Don't want to spend a ton of dough. Thanks, any help will be much appreciated!

I also am pretty sure I have read you can just plug em, but not 100% I recall threads over at fordsix.com debating the smog heads in terms of performance -- you cannot port and polish them as nicely as the earlier ones -- thus the earlier ones are more desireable from a performance standpoint. May reflect their cost as well.

i'm not too worried about perfomance as it just hauls junk type truck.
long as it runs reasonably well is all i care about. forgot about the ford six website. i'll be sure to check that as well. thanks
