I need to pull a Chebby S10 on a small trailer on about a 6 hr drive. I have an '03 E150 5.4L...but it only has the factory step bumper - doesnt seem to be a good idea to me...but I'm no towing expert. Figured I'd see what you guys think.
I'm assuming the bumper is rated at 5000# and I'm also assuming that the combo you posted will be over that. Nope, not a great idea. If it's under the weight rating don't worry about it, but be careful. I'm not a proponant of ever towing from the bumper.
get you a bolt on receiver hitch and you'll be all set. Also does the trailer have dual axles and brakes? If it has electric brakes on the trailer you'll also need a brake controller if you don't already have one. Unless the trailer has surge brakes then you won't need one.
Having pulled much heavier loads from the bumper of a F150, I wouldn't give it a second thought. I KNOW the truck is capable. Weather the driver can handle it is a question only you can answer.
I don't think an S-10 and trailer would be much danger on an E-150. Consumer Guide gives curb weight of an S-10 as around 3000 lbs, figure another 1000 lbs (?) for the trailer. You should be well within what the bumper will handle. Trailer brakes would be nice but if you don't, just take it easy. I would not expect you would have any problems.
