I have a 96 f250 with a e40d trans and its leaking out of the base of the dipstick where it goes into the case of the trans. I went to the dealership thinking it would have an o-ring or a gromet or something but they said no it doesn't, just pressed in. SOunds dumb to me. Anyway I'm trying to get the bolt out that holds the dipstick and its a royal pita! Does anyone know what size bolt that is? I used a 13mm but 1/2" fits better. Also how much is it torqued to because I'm using all my a$$ and i have alot and it won't budge. Any help with this or what tool to use? I've used an open end since a socket wont fit, a gear wrench wouldnt fit, a boxed end wrench won't work for some reason it won't fit. I've sprayed it with pb blaster too and still nothing. Thanks for the help.
kc,I can't help with the bolt, but I just had a leak repaired as you described. Mine is a 97 chassis and they said they replace the O-ring seal. For more info you can see the tread I've had on E40D transmission leak, just updated today.
If you need be, I will call my shop and ask them, they may remember since it was only yesterday.

Thanks but i just did it yesterday. I finally got it loose, i had to use a long 1/2 snap on open end. I put some silicone around it and let it sit over night and so far so good. Thanks for the help though.
My transmission temperature guage read up to 250 degrees before fixing the O-ring leak at the dipstick tube. After fixing it the temperature in the same driving conditions (only hotter outside air temp, around 95 degrees vs 82 degrees) never goes above 190 degrees.
