I have a slow leak from the front differential at the big seal that faces the front of the vehicle on my 95 Explorer. Unlike the rear axle, it appears very difficult to reach all the bolts that ring the seal to remove them. Haynes manual is no help. Has anyone done this repair? Do you have any suggestions to improve access?
I assume the big "seal" you are talking about is under the differential cover. If so, it is actually a gasket and can leak a little sometimes. The easiest way to get these off is to jack the front end up as high as it will go. The axle should drop down enough to get to the bolts. If not, you may need to disconnect the shocks and then jack it way up. The coil springs can stay on since they will just stretch out and give you plenty of access. If this is not the "seal" you are talking about, give some more detailed info about it and we will try to help you...
Thanks that is what I thought it was until reading about pinion seal leaks on this site. Now I will clean it again and check more closely where it is leaking. It is a really slow leak. It is a 95 with 66,000 miles. I have synthetic fluid everywhere except the front differential because it was such a pain to remove the old fluid through the hole.
Jacking up the front of a '95+ Explorer will not allow the front differential to drop. It is bolted directly to the frame and does not move. Only the tires will drop and the CV joints that they are connected to. The TTB differential from a '94 and earlier Explorer will drop when the front is jacked up.
