winding noise

I have a winding noise as I accelerate, starts and tails off through the first 2 shifts and is not noticable at 45+ MPH. Noise also returns during braking to a stop. 1998 SOHC 83,000 miles. Engine runs great. No evident shiftong or powr problems. Any ideas as where to start? Or anyone experiencing the same problem?
