tapping (could become knocking)
I noticed yesterday, that when I'm at a stoplight, and I turn A/C, radio, etc off, I can hear a slight tapping noise, which sounds as if it's coming from the front left wheel. It almost sounds as if there's some slack somewhere in the wheel, so when I start to let the clutch out, it seems as though it runs to the front of the slack, and "engages," or, if I let off the clutch and brake, roll backward, it makes it to the back of the slack, and catches.... I don't know if I'm describing this right....
Here, I'll take another shot at it... it almost sounds the same as when the UJoints went out on my '86 jetta back in high school.... except that my Explorer isn't FWD or 4wd, so there's no Ujoints in the front.
My first (somewhat uneducated) guess is that perhaps my wheel bearing is going bad?
If that is hte problem, how hard to fix?
Thanks in advance....
If you are sure it's the bearing, it should be real easy to replace on a 2WD. Jack up the front and pull the wheel in and out. If there is excessive play, then it's time for a wheel bearing change...
the reason I said it happens at a stop light is because it's only when I start or stop, i.e. rolling backward and forward like you can do in a 5 spd.
yeah, it's about the same distance every time......
