Big Ol Problem

hey everyone, my 1987 f350 has a 1990 7.3 in it. well on our way home today the truck started to shake and then it died. ok. so then we try to get it fired up again and the fuel pump on the frame next to the fuel filter is clicking in the on position on the key. we assume it's the fuel pump so we went and bought a 35 gph fuel pump and put that in and turn the key to the on position. it clicks just like the old one. so we open the gas tanks and when we open the rear one diesel flies out and forces the gas cap back. that's where you come in. what could possibly be wrong? please help us. Thanks, Austynn

Sounds like the check valves in the lines aren't working and you're getting back pressure in the one tank. (Cross feeding from the other tank. Mainly a Gas Engine problem, but I wouldn;t put it past a diesel FORD to do this.)

Fuel pumps in the tanks need to be replaced as they should havethe valves built in. (check with the parts guys on this).

that sounds plausible but why wouldnt it be drawing from the rear tank? it is just emptying the front tank and when you switch it to the rear tank it still draws from the front.
