351W Performance

I just purchased a 351W out of a 1977 Ford Chalet Van.

This engine will be swapped into my 1970 Bronco and I want to make sure it is a good performer as a daily driver/wheeler.

I have been told that the heads are not the best, but a good port/polish job on the stock heads with a 4-barrel intake and carb with a free-flowing exhaust will help out a great deal. This is encouraging.

If I were to look around for heads in the parts yard, what year should I look for?

Also, if I were to buy some aftermarket heads that weren't too expensive with better flow characteristics, which ones should I go with? I have heard that World Products Windsor Junior heads are a good choice; any recommendations?

Thank you,
Chris

It'll probably cost you as much for new heads as it would for the port/polish heads.

Some high flow heads and 8.5-9 for compression and you'll be good. Edlebrock has some nice complete packages (heads, intake, carb, cam, headers) for a good price.

There are two basic questions I'd have:

1. What do you want to actually DO with the truck? And

2. How big is your wallet?

There's NO question that Edelbrock stuff correctly matched can really make the thing go! But it all comes with a price.

The Power Pack (matched intake/carb/cam/lifters) for a Windsor runs close to $600, and streetable/emissions-legal heads (coplete/polished) are over $800 each. You'll need to upgrade the exhaust too, in order to get the full benefit. This can be a MAJOR pain to find the right parts to fit. Go to Flowmaster first.

You'll still notice a BIG difference just doing everything BUT the heads, and save a big chunk of change to boot. If you're not going to the track on weekends, this is what I'd recommend.
