Klunk then squeal
Truck seems to run fine but every once in a while during a sharp turn I hear a klunk or thud sound . It sounds like it is coming from the rear end. After the klunk I get a squealing sound that lasts a few seconds. Will be putting new u-joints on this weekend in the hopes of solving the problem. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Am I on the right track with the u-joints? Also when I change them, What kind of grease goes in the splines to the trans? Thanks, Jordan. BTW it is a 98 F-150 4x4 ext with a 4.6, 4r70w trans.

If its while turning I would look more towards the wheel bearings. When a U-Joint goes out you would have symptoms like squealing a low speed and vibration at high speeds. Turning would not affect them. For greasing the splines, the thicker the grease the better. Suppose it could be a half shaft shifting to one side w/ a rear wheel bearing going but if that where the case your truck would pull to one side when braking and you would see gear oil coming from your brake drum.
