In my 2000 3.0L, there is a rattling sound anytime I am pressing the gas pedal above 3000 RPMs. It is the worst whenever I am going up a hill. If I hold the pedal steady, in one place, at 3500, 4000Rpms the sound will go away until I press the pedal. I have checked the engine and can find nothing. could it be A timing chain tensioner? Also, if it could be that, does anyone know if there was a recall for the part?
Are you sure you aren't hearing the engine "ping". Your symptoms sound like the classic engine ping. Try a tank of premium gas to see if anything changes. I doubt it is the tensioner. They tend to squeal or rumble, not rattle. Is this something that just started, or has it been happening for a while? You might pull the spark plugs to see what shape they are in.
I have tried running premium with octane boosters and what not. Doesnt seem to do the job. I am positive it is not a ping, it is a vibration of some kind, but it never stops. Its been going on for a little less than a year. No one seems to find anything wrong with it. I checked the plugs and are in perfect shape.
I will try checking that, but I dont think the rattle would be as constant or I guess consistant, but you never know. Thanks. If you think of anyhting else be sure to let me know.
