AOD Questions

I've recently got a '90 AOD out of a Crown Victoria that I plan on putting in my '51 pickup. I have an '84 302 2 barrel out of a Mustang.

1. How much tranny fluid goes in the tranny and what type of fluid.
2. How much fluid goes in the converter and what type of fluid.
3. I need to know how to adjust the TV rod. Since I have a Motorcraft 2150 with the proper throttle linkage and the TV rod linkage out of '84 Thunderbird. There is a small set screw on the throttle linkage and the bottom of the TV rod is threaded.

Any help is really APRECIATED .

Depending on the cooler that you use you'll need 12-13 quarts to fill the transmission and torque converter. Use MERCON fluid.

You do know that the torque converter is filled by the transmission pump, right? And that they share the same fluid?

I don't know how to set the TV linkage on that transmission, but I do know enough to tell you that it is CRITICAL to get it EXACTLY right. You should find a shop manual for a '90 Crown Vic to get the correct procedure.

I forgot to ask how big of a tranny cooler do I need since my radiator doesn't have a built in tranny cooler. I'm replacing all the fluid in the tranny. Don't you put like half a quart of ATF in the converter so it isn't dry whne you start up. I'm not using the the Crown Victoria TV cable. I'm using the older style TV ROD linkage. Don't you adjust the TV cable/rod so that is lever doesn't move at no throttle and at full throttle it should have moved the rod to the stop?

Also if the tranny filter in the oil pan or is it connected in the cooling lines?

It's hard to say how big of a cooler you'll need. Driving cycle, wieght, towing, etc all enter into it.

You can put some fluid in the converter if you like.

I adjust the TV cable on the later models to 38 PSI with a spacer tool inserted in the cable. I have never heard of the method you described, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. It just means I don't know about it.

There is a filter in the pan.
