Explore 99 Ball Joint Replacemet Question
I just returned from the dealer after getting new tires. They say I need ball joints replaced. They say it is worn with 1/4 in play. My question is, do they need to be replaced now? How log can I wait (we do just city/Hwy driving) before it is necessary to replace? What harm will it do if I do not replace now?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

1/4" of play is not good. You can feel how much that translates to the tire by jacking the front tire up and pulling on the top and bottom of the tire back and forth.
Ball joint problems lead to bad handling, poor steering response, and improper tire wear. In fact, you probably have uneven tire wear on your front tires already.
If the ball joint fails, you could actually lose a front wheel!
