Locked in My Explorer!

I have a 91 Explorer XLT and my driver door will not open from the inside. It does not seem to be catching on whatever it catches on and I have to open the door from the outside. I am not sure if a part has broken or not and i dont want to go and rip apart my whole door until i know what the problem is. Has anyone experienced this problem or know how to fix the handles because i am not an expert on anything to do with cars and it is getting annoying to have to roll the window down all the time. Any help will be greatly appreciated. THanks

Well, I don’t know what’s wrong maybe the pin holding the cable broke. Take the door panel of and look to see what could be wrong.
You should have posted this in the (Explorer AND Sport trac) forum, please go and do that, okay.

I had a similar problem with a rear door in my Explorer. Turns out it was the door handle assembly. It's made of plastic and broke. IIRC it was about $10 at the dealer. As the previous poster stated it could also be that the pin came off the bar that attaches to the handle assembly and actuates the lock mechanism. Regardless, you need to take off the inside door panel to diagnose the problem. It's not difficult. It shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to remove.

Same thing happened to me. Took it to the dealer and paid $72.00 for a new door switch.

I bought my 97 and later found out that the gear teath on both inside rear handles were broken. Obviously by some person stuck in the back that thought if something doesn't work, just pull harder. I took the handles off my spare 92 (can't believe that handles are only $10 from dealer, have to check that out) and applied lots of oil to the latch mechanism. After gently working the handle about 30 times, it started to work. I believe this is the result of the previous owner pressure washing the car often enough to wash out the lube. Then rust took its toll. The rear handles are connected to the latch by a thin wire bar that bends easily if it meets any resistance. The lesson here is to squirt some oil in the latches and hinges (even though they are plastic coated bushings) at every oil change.

On the front door, I had the rivit that holds the electric actuator fail. Can't imagine the reason. Nothing worse than working on doors. I always end up with lots of nasty cuts.
