Alternator Problems

Alternator died on my 72' F100. I put a new alternator in, wouldnt' charge, new regulator, still won't get above 12 volts, and if I rev it up the voltmeter doesn't budge. I did notice though that my new alternator has a STA stud, and I know that 70-72's didn't use the STA, but I can't remember if my old alternator had one. Right now I have wires going to the BAT and to the FLD (orange), and then to the ground I have a wire going from the block to the alternator just to make sure the alternator was getting good ground, I think with the old alternator it just grounded itself, as should this one, but I wanted to be sure. Any suggestions? Do I have the right alternator? Thanks for any help.

My 1971 390 is grounded through the alt. bracket (plus frame, body, radiator, voltage reg. etc.) too. I think maybe a pin pushed out of the connector to the voltage regulator. Make sure all the pins are seated once connected in the harness to the voltage regulator and alternator. It is a common problem for these to go bad after a couple of years. Especially the voltage regulator since the harness hangs so the harness pulls down on the connectors.

I just checked that, and all the connectors seemed to be fine. I was wondering though about all those fuseable links throughout the wiring harness. Is it possible one of them burned out? If they have, do you just have to cut the tape off them and cut the wires out and buy new fuseable links? Any other suggestions would be helpfull, I need to get this truck back on the road.

Also, I went back to autozone and asked to see my old alternator and I compared them, and they are exaclty the same, so I don't think it is the STA stud.

Here's how it should be wired. And yes, you may have a fusible link burned out in the output wire(orange/black) that is hooked to the starter solenoid connection. I don't know if your year truck had it or not. You should be able to take the wires off and check for continuity on each one.

Thanks for the diagram, it really helped. I found out the wire from my ignition to my regulator had grounded out and melted, everything works now. Thanks a lot.
