Question Locking Hubs or Differential?

Do the front hubs on a '99 Explorer XLT 4x4 lock and unlock? How about the differential or front driveline (excluding the transfer case)?

Form my testing, the hubs, front differential, and front driveline are always locked/engaged. Only the transfer case engages/disengages the front drive. Is this true?

I get a different answer from different people: the hubs are viscous controlled, the differential is vacuum locked, they are all perminantly engaged, the hubs are automatically locked through a mechanical function. However, I have looked over all the components and tested many scenarios but find the entire front drive system to be always locked up to the transfer case.

'91-'94 Explorer front hubs were "locked through a mechanical function."
'95-'96 Explorers have a vacuum controlled mechanism in the front differential
'97+ have "live" axles up front in that there is no mechanism to the front axleshafts from the wheels.

Thanks, mrshorty.

So a full time lockup from the front driveline to the wheel is correct for my '99.
