390 3spd. *rate performance!

I hate manual column shifters so I would rate the performance low, besides that, they always seem to develop linkage trouble and the little plastic inserts/bushings wear out quickly and get sloppy.

I had a 360 with a 3 speed with 3:08 rears. It worked just fine. Beautiful highway gearing, but no bottom end. I replaced the 360 with a 390 and other than no bottom end (burning clutches to get loads moving) it still handled the 390 with no problems. I finally replaced the three speed with a four speed to get some bottom end out of it. After putting the 4 speed in, I never had another problem with that truck.

I have to agree,with Rebocardo... The 3 on the tree's go thru bushings..and there not a very positive shift.. The linkage bushings in the coluum arent worth the powder to blow them to ...you get the idea....
If they were so good..Why arent the on trucks today...? to many components to go thru..More components more wear..and a mushy shift...
