I have an 89 Bronco with a 302 (auto) thats needs a computer. Is there a company that sells a Hi-performance computer or is it a stock one with a chip?

I have it on 31, 1050's right now but want more HP!!

Any help will be great

Thanks

Welcome to FTE Garrey. Is your current computer broken or something? I dont know of any such thing as a high performance computer. The actual CPU is all run by a chip of some sort. You should check out our 'Computer Tuning' forum, a few below this Big Bronco forum. The most popular chip is the Diablo Sport chip. They are sold here on the site. You might want to ask some questions over there.

Thanks, the problem I am told is that it is not responding to the mech. computer. It is just idling at about 1500 to 2000 rpm. I changed the IAC in it and it is not helping. The truck was used to go hunting with from the past owner so not really sure how or where it was driven.

Thanks for the info

It doesnt sound like the computer. It could be a ton of different things. Have you tried pulling codes?

http://www.autoecms.com/ is where you can get used ECU's FYI

you ecu is speed density. adding a chip wont give you to much of an improvment and will put a nice whole in your wallet. you want hp. get headers, and a good flowing exhaust. then look at the throttle body and intake. from there you can add a cam and do some head work . chips are really meant for a motor that has some stuff done to it already.

The above comments are all good.
But to directly answer your question: Yes.

The aftermarket computers allow you to tune your engine. They also require that you tune your engine.

Limited tuning is possible on stock Ford computers, but is ordinarily considered to be a waste of time on the speed density versions. More information and resources are available for the mass air computers.

Any upgrades to the computer or "performance tuning" is also, IMO, a waste of time unless the engine has been significantly modified. Cam or heads, maybe headers and intake.

There are several chip makers for the Mass air computer.
There are also several programmers available for the Mass air version. Tweecer is the most popular, from what I can tell.
I've also heard very good things about the supertuner (I think) for the later OBDII computers.

Aftermarket computer systems:
AEM
FAST
DFI
MegaSquirt
Holley has a system, don't recall the name (systemax ??).
There may be others.

AEM is the most expensive. Arguably the best. It can be configured as speed density or mass air. The others, I believe, are all speed density.

MegaSquirt is the cheapest. Can be purchased as parts kits (computer chips and circuit boards). Apparently began as a diy approach to fuel injection.

None of them are "plug and play". You will have to tune the engine, or pay someone to tune it for you.

Thank you to everyone!!!!

The ecm is not showing any codes, or can the computer read the ecm. I am planning on headers and dual flowmasters (i think!!). My 1979 bronco had the 351 cleveland in it and I was happy with the power. Tring to cheat with the 302 I guess!!
