2002 Explorer V8?

I'm planning to buy a new Explorer soon. I know this is a silly question, but, is there any reason NOT to get the V8 in a 2002 Explorer XLT? According to Edmonds, it adds $690 to the vehicle cost, and cuts MPG by 2. Seems worth it to me.

Thanks,
Glenn

2002 Explorer V8?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Aug-02 AT 12:10 PM (EST)] I had the same issue . . . Are you purchasing the third row seat option as well? If so, do you plan to drive 7 adults an a regular bases? Will you be towing anything? Are there hills by where you will be driving? These types of questions need to be answered before making the decision. I have the third row seat (plan to have family grow into it in the years to come), do not plan to tow anything and have minimal hills by me, yet decided to go with the V8. My reasoning-I felt I would regret more not buying the V8 than buying it :-) I also read that it helps in the ride comfort as it cuts down on the engine noise. Just my two cents.

But getting to your acutal question, other than fuel economy, I cannot think of a reason against getting the V8

Good luck

I agree the V8 is a great choice. That engine was first used in the 92 Crown Vic/ Grand Marquis (possibly even the 90 Town Car before that, can't remember off the top of my head :-) ). In any case, it's been around along time and is a proven reliable engine. Plus it has lots of power and according to Edmunds is super smooth and quiet. I say go for it.

2002 Explorer V8?

I know this post is old, but i would like to add, i went through the same dilema. I asked my self the same questions from the post above. I felt that i need the V8 for two reasons. The first being that i am a motor head (fellow motor heads know what i am talking about) and lastly i have mountain passes to go over, i tow alot and i liked the 3rd row seating for family.

so i purchased the 02 XLT V8 with 3rd row seat and optiona Class IV towing package (7000lbs.) I have had the SUV two months now and i dont regret choosing the V8 at all. It is a little costly in the pocket for fuel, but i havent been let down yet.

I would like to know if you purchased the V8 or decided to go with something else?
