I Have a 02 Ford Explorer Sport
When it is humid out Im sitting in traffic it over heats.. Also at the drive=in..
It did it to me last year at the woodward dream cruise..
I replace the thremostat and it still does it..
There have been a few users who have testified that they have had to replace their thermostat every 6 months. This is somewhat uncommon but not outside the realm of possibiliity.
You can hear the fan kick on....
When it start's to overheat i have my air on
the air turns warm the gauge goes up...
Then i turn the air off it cools down..Sometimes or i
have to turn the heat on and have roasted nuts...
This is all when im sitting in traffic or the vehicle is in park..
The thremostat might be sticking.. But i just replace it
Do they go bad every couple months..
p.s. It does it mostly when it's humid out and hot

You can check to see if the thermostat is sticking by removing it and place it in a saucepan with water and place in on the stove. Boil the water to see if the stempiece sticks when the temp gets to 180 or 195 degrees, depending on what type of thermostat you put in.
Does the truck cool down when you start driving again? If so, your thermostat is probably good. I say probably because I have seen thermostats fail to open fully but it's rare...
If the truck cools down once you start driving then you probably have a bad thermal fan clutch. (I assume the 2002's still have thermal clutches???)
To check it get the truck up to operating temperature and then shut it off. Open the hood and give the fan a twist. If it spins freely replace the clutch. If it is difficult to spin you need to look elsewhere.
Also while you're in there check for cold spots on the radiator, this is an indication of plugged cores.
