I have a 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer with all the "toys" on it...
The navigation radio appears to malfunction due to overheating. It was replaced for this concern once (but it has not been consistently hot & sunny since the repair until now); it is now showing the same symptoms again.
The GPS will not "lock" (i.e. the compass go from red to yellow to white) and place the vehicle correctly on the map. Apparently, after cooling off, it works again. The navigation CD after ejection & face of the unit feel quite warm when I observe the problem.
The unit even has a fan on the housing (hidden in dashboard space) to cool it sort of like a computer (it is a computer!).
Apparently most Dealer repair shops don't diagnose these things too carefully --- just swap them out with a recondioned unit. Are the nav radios failure prone or problematic?...comments/performace/experiences anyone???(especially folks in hot states!)
Vehicle Navigation Radio (VNR) is made by Visteon for Ford. The built-in self test shows OK.
I checked the TSBs at motorcraft.com & nothing was there.
I too have been having random issues with my navigation system. Somtimes it will just hang for 10-15secs then reboot. Although I do have a funny story about that nav system, about a month ago it stopped working altoghter, and I noticed that the cd would no longer eject. When I ran my finger along the felt at the opening of the cd I felt somthing wierd. Got out the needle nose pliers and pulled out an atm card, then 2 pennies, at which point the cd ejected and brought with it 2 more pennies. I then completely disassembled the dash to remove the nav system, and when I was walking into the house with it, it sounded like a piggy bank. I ended up pulling 22 more pennies out of it, it seems my 2 year old son who likes to stand in the drivers seat and pretend that he is driving, had seen us put cd in once or twice and decided to see what else would fit in there. I haven't noticed any new glitches since I removed all of the change from it, but it still hangs and reboots every once in a while.
