My in-laws just purchsed a 26ft Travel Trailer that they need to tow to their house. The trailer weighs approximately 6500lbs. They have a 1995 F150 4x4 with a 302/auto. Not sure on the rear gear though. The truck is completely stock. He also has a Class 3 receiver setup. So is this a safe setup to tow this thing 40 miles up and down some pretty steep grades? For those of you in VA he is towing from Gainsville to Berryville. I told him to get a brake controller and he is going to. I also offered to tow it with my 2000 v10 Excursion. So let me know the pros and cons of this setup. Thanks!!
That's going to be over the tow limit for the F150 and way too much for the 302 especially in the steep grades. Your Excursion should probably be able to do the job though.
Do the f150 a favor and use the X. Safer, more comfortable and a whole lot easier on both trucks. BTW, what truck is he planning on using to tow with in the future?
The place they will be camping is only 7 miles from their house and it is mostly level all the way there. I am waiting to hear back from him on what he wants to do. Just curious does anyone know the max tow rating for that F150? Thanks for the inputs guys!!
That F-150 most probably has 3.55 gears. If that is the case, maximum trailer rating is 7000 lbs, based on information in my 1994 owners manual.
I dont know about steep grades in VA, but I drive regularly up and down California 330, about a 5000 foot elevation change in 13 miles. It takes second gear for that 302 to climb it comfortably even without a trailer, mostly because it is too twisty to keep the speed above 40. Third gear takes me safely downhill without using the brakes much at all.
The truck can handle it, in spite of what the specs may say. I personally know of one F150 with a 6 and M5 that pulled both a 32' Coachman and a 34' Dutchman coast to coast (individually not together). It did this for about 5 years. It did of course have a trailer brake controller. The weak link in this picture is the automatic.
a brake controler is necessary, then wory about power. Better yet, contact me, ill move it, im in the DC area. This is in the realm of my lawn & TRAILERING business
