Swinging Speedometer
Got alot of work on my 56 over the winter and spring months. I'll post new pics soon. I took a test run to town this weekend and found my speedometer had alot (20 MPH) of swing in it. I estimate I was travelling ~45 mph. Road was marginally rough but not too bad. Still speedo would just bounce between 40 and 60 the whole way. Any thoughts?

Is there a place to lube the speedo mechanism? The speedo on my 55 Fairlane was a swinger and it made a lot of noise until I lubed it. That was 8 years ago and it's still fine. Good luck, John

If the 56 speedo is the same as my 57. If you removed it from the dash (may need to take it all the way out) you may find a small brass plug on the top near were the cable goes in. If you remove that plug you will find a small peace of cotton under it just fill it with light oil and let the cotton wick it up and work it some. Also you may want to lube the cable as well.

I had the same problem and thought it was the cable. My odometer did not work at all and so I took the whole thing out and saw that the odometer could not be fixed. I got another speedo from a parts truck and oiled it up good (WD40) and got it moving freely. Then I found a little hole, called a wick hole. I put several drops of light oil in the wick hole and it has been working good ever since, about 3 years. I guess one should get up in there yearly and put some drops of oil in there, especially if it is used in dusty conditions like my truck was used on the farm.
