Programming keys for late model Explorers

I understand that my 1998 Explorer using the PATS II system of making the keys talk to the computer before the engine will start. This also means that you can't program your own keys by starting the engine with the known-good key, stopping the engine, then inserting the new key within 10 seconds, and starting the engine, as you could with a PATS I car, like a Taurus.

So, I just got done paying $25 to have the key cut and $83 to have the key programmed. Now I have two working keys to my truck.

However, I've heard that you can do your own programming for a key for a PATS II vehicle if you have two working keys on hand. Does anyone have that procedure?

Thanks,
Todd

I just programed two additional keys for my 02 Explorer. You have to have the 2 original master keys to program additional keys. The manual also said 8 is the max number to program. I never went to the spring loaded start position to program them. The procedure is in the owners manual.
