AC problems

Ended up with a 95 ranger 2.3 5 speed instead of a 2001 incase anyone read my other posts.

Well this little truck runs great, but it has a funny problem. When i'm driving along with the AC on and i shift the AC kicks to the defrost, shift again it kicks to the floor, shift again and it comes back out the vents.

I figure its vacumm leak somewhere, but where do i look? Need some direction before i start trying to track it down. I figure it could be anywhere.

A little background on the truck, its a 95 2.3 5 speed it has been in a flood, so i'm afraid that might of damaged something. It has a reclaimed salvage on the title....the bed of the truck was full of mud when i got it, and some on the floor, but i only paid 500 bucks for it and it looks and runs like new other than the AC kicking around.

thanks guys

Well, in 95 the HVAC (A/C) system went electronic behind the dash. So, for all we can say, there maybe some leftover water corrupting things in the wiring harness.

Since it's been flooded, well, the dash might have to come off....not a good thing, but I don't know many of us here who would have bought a flood vehicle just to have that kind of inevitable experience anyway.

Good luck.

this might not help but,,,,

my fathers van a year ago did same thing, automatic but still it changed vents and wierd stuff,,,,

well theres this box around a corner behind a wire by a hole connected t osome junk,, that controlls that and has a small electric motor with a plastic sprocket, well that plastic piece broke

ps after we fixed it, it broke agin 5 months later,, that dash sucks, and i quit helping out of anger so that description is second hand info ~

Your 95 has a vaccum controlled diverter,it sounds like you have a bad check valve.Mine did the same thing, but I couldn't locate the little check valve and ended up cutting the incoming vaccum source (the black line to the back of the control switch) plugging the original incoming line and then running a new line to manifold vaccum and putting an inline check valve(a-z $2)and now it works great. If I had to do it again I would try harder to locate the original check valve, maybe ask someone at ford where it is located. You see,
when your at idle you have plenty of vaccum and it works, but when RPMs increase you loose vaccum and it returns to the default possition(def-floor). The check valve is there to hold vaccum on the switch when you accelorate,if its not working you loose vaccum to the switch. When you return to idle, you vaccum returns to the switch causeing it to work again. P.S. in response to Wulfeye's post, It couldn't be the what-cha-ma-call-it, it is obviously the thing-a-ma-bob.
