Hello, I need to put a new A4LD in my 93 Explorer and I am on a very tight budgett. Does anyone know if a an A4LD is an A4LD out of anything or do I need to find one specifically for the 4.0 V6? This is just my everyday driver and it does no toeing, or offroading so if I can use one from an Aerostar or Ranger that would be sweet. Will any A4LD from a 2.3, 2.9, 3.0, and 4.0 bolt up to my Explorer's 4.0 as long as the trans came out of a RWD?
A complete A4LD from a 4.0 is the only one that will directly bolt up. Changing the bell housing is an option but involves changing parts of the pump and an alignment problem unless you have the proper tools.
Most transmissions that are used across engine and vehicle gaps also have slightly different internals. Example: 4R70W's behind a 4.6 have more internal clutch bands then the one out of the 3.8 - so putting a 4R70W from a 3.8 behind a 4.6 is not a smart move. I'd imagine that the A4LD behind the relatively powerful 4.0's would have internal modifications to stand up to the increased torque over, say an A4LD from behind a 2.8. Don't quote me on that...but the A4LD isn't a strong transmission behind a 2.8, so the 4.0 would have to have SOMETHING different I'd think...
Yes you are right the A4LD has had a number of internal changes over the years but again, I am really looking for the cheapest way out of this problem so thats why I was thinking getting one from an Aerostar but maybe thats not going to work out for me.
As hkiefus says in his signature: Do it once, do it right.
If you're mechanically inclined at all and have a bit of room, you could get a rebuild kit for the A4LD and even upgrade so you'll never throw a tranny again. If not...a rebuild on an A4LD isn't too expensive anyways, shop around and make it CLEAR that you're shopping around.
If you go used, you're just going to be doing this again in a year or two. Transmissions are the ONE part that I wouldn't dare play around with used, unless its an old tranny like a T18 or NP435.
That was another thing I was thinking about. Getting a book on the A4LD and doing it myself. I see rebuild kits on ebay for around $100 or $120 for the HD upgrade. Maybe I will give it a try, whats the worst that could happen, mess up a trans thats already messed up? LOL That kind of time do you think I am looking at here, I am fairly mechanically inclined but I have never been into a Auto trans before?
Thanks,
Brad
