I have a 94 XLT 4WD with 75K mi. It just started acting up. It shifts fine 1-2-3-4, very smooth. The problem is when in D and cruising 30-35 mph. When I go up a slight incline in 3, it bogs down then it "BANGs" into 2, then bangs back into 3. Also, when slowing down to a stop it "drags" the motor down more than usual before it shifts back to 1. It also appears at this speed to hunt between 2 and 3.
I never changed the fluid since the manual doesnt say to. I have never towed anything. I checked the fluid level and it is fine. The color is not red like new fluid, it is more of a golden color and has a smell (not a burnt smell though).
I added a transmission conditioner tonight. No change yet. The problem is only a few day old. I plan to bring it in this week.
My thoughts are to do the following
- tranny flush
- new fluid and filter
- check linkages and adjust
other ideas
- speed governor
- vacuum diaphram.
Any other toughts on what may have happened?. How often should I change fluid as a normal driver.
