1997 4.0 pinging final fixed
I just wanted to share that I finally resolved the pinging in my 97 4.0 OHV explorer. The solution was to take the upper intake manifold off and tighten the lower manifold bolts. Luckily it did the trick and I did not have to change the gasket. The bolt were pretty loose. The job took about 3 hours and only required a good socket set and wrenches.

When I did this to my '92, I managed without removing the upper intake manifold. Took some creativity to get to a couple of the bolts, but most were easily accesible through the upper manifold.
