Went on vacations to black hills. 3 things happened which concerned me. 1st oil build up around intercooler hose blue one , hose is wet with oil. 2nd was driving up and down hills out there did not use tow haul mod (WITH OUT TRAILER) and was coasting down a hill when the engine just shut off oh was that scary, on a 4% decline. 3rd since the engine shut off going down the road I decided to use the tow haul mod ,(going through the needles highway) now the ABS idiot light comes on, pull off brakes not hot I didnt think I was using them that much. Stopped let truck cool down, started up abs light off, little down the road it came back on, than I stopped let truck cool down than took the trans out of tow haul mod and no abs light. Guy told me ford has 4 sensors in rear that sense braking and it could have heated up ? Also I tow a 21 foot rv trailer 8 foot wide and got only 10 mpg, I am looking at buying a 5 th wheel will my mileage go to 6 mpg . I cant find that posted that says how to take off the air fliter assembly please help thanks 2004 350 drw 6300 miles 6.0. Take care during the 4th gentlemen. going to shop with it tuesday
1st the oil build up has been discussed in other threads, I can't remember the cause, but I believe it was overfilled. The second and third issue you should take to a dealer immediately. It sounds as though computer issue or wire chafing may be a culprit. You will probably get some posts on the second and third issue sooner or later with more informed people than me but from my glancing at posts those are probably the cause of your issue.
My '04 dually pulls 8.5 mpg pulling 32' fiver, GCVW 21.5k. This is average over 'bout 9k miles towing.running @ 65 mph. MT mileage is about 14 mpg. Boost will max 30 lb. gauge, normal EGT 900º to 1100º, never over1200º. I've never had to back off the throttle on a pull because of high EGT.
