Hello I am new to this site. I have a '99 F250 with the PSD in it with 85 K on it. Just recently it has started running extremly rough when cold like it was out of fuel. As soon as the water temperture gage comes up it will run just fine. I replaced the fuel filter and it is still doing this. As anyone else had this problem and what may be the problem. Thank You for your help Russ
How cold is "cold"? Perhaps you should look at and try the simplest things first. Try some Diesel Kleen injector cleaner from WalMart, or similar to clean the injectors. If Diesel fuel additives do not help, look into the glow plugs, as far as if all are working, or only a few. Also take a look at your air filter, too. If its none of these, someone else will have to chip in and offer something. Good luck.
seems like the first start after sitting or night ty for ur suggestions air filter is still clean from the last change out did not think of the glow plugs outside air temp has been in the 50s at night so i would think i would not need the block heater but when i do plug it in over night the mornings after i dont have this problem.
The fuel injector cleaner I think will help. It also has a cetane boost in it, ( similar to octane in gasoline ) which will help initial start, too. There are several DFA's out on the market. Many use Stanadyne, and others. I use Diesel Kleen because its more readily available, and because many people have had real good results. I think you can get Shell's DFA at Wal Mart , also. I don't know an easy way to check each glow plug. The glow plug relay, also goes bad, not allowing any of the glow plugs to work.
this sounds pretty dumb but when was the last time you changed your oil?
since theese trucks have hydraulic injectors they are real finiky on what oil is in them. ive got a buddy that works for international. thats what he has told me anytime it starts runnin rough, change the oil and the filters. most of the time it has cleared it all up
I have to chime with my vote for the glow plugs. Since it runs fine when warmed up, and starts and runs fine if the block heater has been plugged in, it sounds thermal. Still, changing the oil if its been a while is a good idea, just to rule it out as a possible cause. Is it by chance blowing white smoke on a cold start? White is unignited fuel, which could also indicate glow plugs....
