Fueling procedures

Another question from a newbie..... Just got a psd (99') and drove it crosscountry. I found that every time I fueled up I usually had to "squeeze" fuel in way beyond the auto shutoff point that the pumps stopped. I usually could pump 5-9 gals more before topping off. I this normal?

Yea - that's pretty much normal. Fun huh?? I can't remember the explanation of why it happens, but do a search for the "Harpoon" mod. and you should get some good info. The harpoon mod involves dropping the tank and trimming the vent pipe that sticks down into the fuel tank, and lets you fuel it full without dribbling in the last gallons in.

Yeah, my 86 F350 with dual 19 gal tanks does that especially on the front tank after being about half full when running empty. You have to squeeze the extra gallons in.

I usually don't put the nozzle all the way in the fill neck and it seems to allow more air to escape. Probably has the same effect as the harpoon mod. Even my rear tank doesn't shut the pump off until it's almost completely full. If I put the nozzle all the way in it's a different story. I have noticed that if I fill at a pump where the pavement is higher on the fill side that I can fill with it all the way in, even with my rear tank.

I can already use the big rig nozzles, but the real problem is the vent that is installed from the factory. That's what the mod that Cat mentioned effects.

The term is "teaspooning it in"! Filled the morning and I though it was lunch time when I went into pay LOL, I tried the method of not sticking the nozzel in all the way and it helped some....just a small trade off for power and an awsome truck!!!!!!! Love my "Power Stroke".
