Im going to replace my spark plugs shortly (if I can ever get them loose..talk about tight!). I bought Bosch Platinum +4 (the best supposedly) for around $35 for my 99 SOHC 4.0L. Ive seen stuff around that recommends sticking with only the OEM style plugs. Anybody got any experience with the Bosch plugs or anything else related to say about plug replacement???
Thanks
I can't comment on what replacement plug to use, but I do have a suggestion when installing the new plugs. Coat the threads with 'Anti Seize'. A tube only costs a couple of bucks and it's definitely worth it. Some people make the mistake of putting something like 'WD 40' on the threads. While it makes it a bit easier to put them in, once the engine gets hot, the wd40 bakes the plug to the head making it very difficult to remove. Use the 'Anti Seize'.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Sep-02 AT 08:31 AM (EST)]I replace my plugs with regular Bosh platinums and a set of Bosh wires... I have known people who put in the +4s and have trouble with them because they cause excesive heat. My friend ('01 Sport X) took his +4 out and replaced them with the regular Bosh platinums and says his gas milage is better with them vice the +4s.
This is an old design adapted to use in cars and trucks. It's an aircraft engine spark plug. The ignition systems on recip airplanes use multiple spark discharge (sounds like MSD?) and can fire these plugs better. Some marketing guy put these plugs in an automotive box and is now making monster bucks. I use NGKs and they work great! Best part is 6 of them cost less then $10.00.
Seen this discussion on every auto website I visit.
i'm sure this aint what you want to hear, cuz maybe you DO feel better spending megabux for plugs....but i agree with previous poster...been all thru this recently...guess what, bosch plats are as far as i go, every 25k, cuz im wacky that way, and i havent come across any that justified the price difference some plugs demand...
Just curious....what do you mean 'DONT LIKE THEM'. Been riding on this set maybe 20k, cant "feel" a thing if you know what I mean. Actually, I have no gripe with OE or cheap plugs...I think this whole spark plug biz is overated to feed egos...make you think you need something you dont...like putting super in instead of regular. but thats another subject.
My ford ran worse with new bosch than with the worn out plugs.
I switched to autolite copper for 78cents a piece and it ran good.
Personally for as hard as it is to change plugs (tight clearances)
on these engines I would just put motorcraft dbl plats. or Autolite double plats on it. It just so happens my dad had similar problems with his dodge ram 50. I was happy with bosch in my subaru though.
So to sum all that rambling crap up:
Fords "like" autolite or motorcraft plugs.
