460 Lockup

Hi Guys I am new to this forum but it sure has a lot of good information. My question is I bought a 1979 Ford pickup with 460/c6, I checked all the fluid levels and proceded to drive it home (50miles) It would heat up and cool back down but really never got so hot that I was very worried about doing any damage. When I got home I tried to add coolant but didnt have any luck so waited until the next day, I started it two or three times moving it out of the way and such, so I knew it still ran but when I got ready to work on it I tried to start it, fired but didnt start, tried again and just went CLUNK!! I thought that didnt sound good and it wasnt because now it appears to be locked up!! Is this possible and how did it happen? Any ideas?? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work I really enjoy reading all of it!! Oh I forgot to tell you all that I bought it to put in my 1966 pickup.

I once saw a starter lock up and act this way. My uncle has a '78 with a 351M in it, the starter locked up while engaged and wouldn't disengage from the flywheel gear, he thought it was seized and almost junked the truck. I'm not going to hold my breath, but it's definitly something to at least rule out.

ANother problem could be nylon part of timing set disintegrated locking chain at crank or cam sprocket. Heating will kill the nylon by making it brittle. Another possibility is you have a bad head gasket which could cause overheating in the first place and can also cause hydraulicing in the leaking cylinder.

But you said you attempted to add water to it when it was hot, but could not. If you were adding cool water to a hot engine and it kept puking it back out, you may have cracked something. Never add cool or cold water, or any coolant to a steaming engine.

To see what happens, heat a cast iron fry pan until it is almost cherry then throw a cup of water in it from a distance, or behind something so the pieces don't hit you . .

Good Luck, I hope your problem is something simpler than cracked or fractured metal.

Thanks for the help guys, the starter I thought about removed it and was still acting like it was locked. Head gasket I was wondering if I took all of the plugs out would this relieve the hydrolock if that is the trouble? Thanks again

Yes, if you remove the plugs that will relieve the hydroloc. Turn it by hand however to avoid nasties!
