lean mixture

Hi everyone.
I'm new here, and I need some help. I have a 97 Ranger with the 2.3L. I keep getting the code saying that the fuel mixture is to lean. Any Ideas on what it might be? I've checked all of my vacuum lines and none are leaking, I have not changed the PCV or the EGR, and the vac line going to the EGR does not seem to have a constant vac pressure going to it. Could this be the problem?

Hi dr-dirt and welcome to FTE.There are tons of things that can give you a lean code, first, the egr probably has nothing to do with it.The egr valve itself only has vac when it is in closed loop.I think you might be on the right track though by looking for vac leaks.Lack of fuel pressure is another thing,or a dirty injector. After looking closely and making sure that you have no leaks,I would toss a can of injector cleaner in the tank and see if that helps.

you should buy a vac pressure guage and test the vac from the intake (normal psi is 15-22),their cheap, like $20. just because the lines are good doesnt mean there isnt a vac leak. could have a bad gasket. my EGR doesnt have constant pressure either, so my guess is that its normal seeing as my vac psi is.
have you checked the o2 sensor?

Does the engine still run fine? You could have a missfire, causing all that oxygen to lean out the O2, but you would notice a rich smell.

The engine still runs great. It runs like it did 70,000 miles ago. I've recently changed all 8 plugs and wires. There is no rich smell, and gas mileage has not really decreased. The O2 sensor was replaced a year ago and has only had 7000 miles on it since. Could it be that one of my coil packs is going causing a missfire? I do notice a sound coming from the back side of the intake manifold, like around the Idle Air Control Solenoid that sounds like a vac leak, but can't pinpoint it. My EGR bolts were a bit loose, cranked them down, and still no improvement.

Its still a good idea to get a vac guage to confirm whether or not it is a vac leak. its easy and fast to test. you could spray something like TB cleaner on the suspected vac leak. if the engine stumbles and steadies out then you found the leak.
